Finding the right car-rental company
Weekly vs. daily rates:
Often, you'll find that you can save on a car rental by reserving it in advance at a weekly rate. Daily car-rental rates can be slightly higher sometimes.
Hours of operation:
A rental-car company's hours of operation are important to keep in mind when coordinating your car-rental pick-up and drop-off. Smaller rental-car companies sometimes close early on weekends, so be sure to check whether your rental-car company's hours of operation match your schedule.
Airport accessibility:
If you're flying to your destination, bear in mind the rental-car company's airport accessibility. Does the rental-car company have pick-up service at the airport? Are the car rentals located in or near the airport, or will it take a while to get to your car rental? If you need to land and go, answers to those questions may influence which rental-car company you choose.
Drop-off convenience:
When choosing a rental-car company, determine whether the car-rental drop-off is convenient for you. You can drop off the car rental at a location different from your car-rental pick-up. However, some rental-car companies may charge a small fee for different pick-up and drop-off locations. If that's easier for you, though, paying a small fee may be worth it.
Age limits:
Most rental-car companies require you to be at least 25 years old to rent a car.
Credit/debit cards:
Most rental-car companies require a credit card, or a debit card featuring the MasterCard or Visa logos, to make your car-rental reservation. Although some rental-car companies do not apply these car-rental rules, you may want to check with the rental-car company first, before you reserving a rental car.
Proof of insurance:
Many rental-car companies also require you to provide proof of insurance when you pick up your car rental. If you forget your proof of insurance -- or don't have car insurance -- you may have to pay for the rental-car company's insurance. Remember that some credit cards automatically provide car-rental insurance as a service to their cardholders. Check with your credit card company for details.
